Two 12-year-old girls accused of viciously stabbing a classmate within a “millimetre from death” told police they plotted for months to commit murder to join an online cult.
Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser face attempted murder charges as adults after luring their friend to a secluded wood before carrying out the attack, inflicting 19 separate puncture wounds.
The two schoolgirls have told investigators they wanted to join the cult of the ‘Slender Man’, believing the fictional character to be real.
They said they had planned to kill their unnamed victim after inviting her for a sleepover in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
“It was weird that I didn’t feel remorse,” one of the girls told police.
“The bad part of me wanted her to die, the good part of me wanted her to live,” the other girl said.
The case has sent shockwaves around America over the ferocity and complex planning of the attack by the two girls.
Both girls are charged with attempted premeditated murder. If convicted, they face 65 years in prison and are being held on $500,000 - £300,000 - bail each.
Weier and Geyser told police they read about the fictional character on a website known as Creepypasta Wiki, where scary stories are submitted by users.
According to reports in the US one of the girls told officers they had to kill someone in order to be accepted in the Slender Man’s world.
Court documents claim the three school friends had spent two days together sleeping over and playing hide-and-seek before Saturday’s horrific attack was carried out.
Also detailed was the moment when their victim tried to escape and the two girls ordered for her to be quiet, hoping she would bleed out and die.
The report read: “As they left for the park … (the victim) was walking in front of them and Geyser lifted up the left side of her white jacket and displayed the knife tucked in her waistband.
“Weier stated she gave Geyser a look with wide eyes and, when asked what that meant Weier stated, ‘I thought, dear god, this was really happening.’”
After the sustained attack the suspects then allegedly left the girl to crawl to her own rescue.
She was found by a passing cyclist who discovered her covered in blood with stab wounds to the stomach, arms and legs.
Surgeons treating the victim say she was a “millimetre from death” with one of the stab wounds nearly slicing open a major artery.
The girl is expected to live.
The alleged attackers were later found walking near a motorway with a backpack full of snacks and a five-inch knife.
Prosecutors claim Weier and Geyser had planned to gag their friend as she slept before stabbing her in the neck as she lay in bed.
According to CNN however they told police they thought a bathroom would be a better scene for the crime because it would be easier to clean up after.
After consulting each other the girls ditched their original plans and instead decided to kill her in the woods following a game of hide-and-seek.
The Slender Man is a fictional character that originated as an internet story created by forum user Eric Knudsen in 2009.
It is depicted as resembling a thin, unnaturally tall man with a blank and usually featureless face, and wearing a black suit.
The Slender Man is commonly said to stalk, abduct, or traumatise people, particularly children. He is not tied to any particular story, but appears in many disparate works of fiction, mostly composed online.
It can also supposedly control people and communicate telepathically.
